What to Expect on Your First Visit to a Nail Salon

Walking into a nail salon for the first time can feel a little overwhelming — the options, the terminology, the unwritten etiquette. Here's everything you need to know to feel confident and get exactly what you want.

Before You Arrive

  • Do some research: Browse the salon's service menu so you have a rough idea of what you want (manicure, pedicure, gel, dip, etc.)
  • Have clean nails: Remove any old polish at home if you can, though your technician will do this for you
  • Arrive on time: Give yourself a few minutes to check in and settle

What Happens During a Manicure

A standard manicure typically follows this flow:

  1. Old polish removal and nail shaping
  2. Cuticle care (pushing back and trimming)
  3. Hand soak or scrub
  4. Hand and arm massage
  5. Base coat, two coats of color, and top coat
  6. Quick dry time or UV curing (for gel)

How to Pick a Color

Don't overthink it! If you're unsure, classic shades like soft pink, nude, or a clean red are always a safe bet. Your technician can also suggest colors based on the season or your skin tone.

Tipping Etiquette

The standard tip at a nail salon is 15-20% of the service total. If your technician went above and beyond, 20-25% is a nice way to show appreciation.

Questions to Ask

  • "What's the difference between gel and dip powder?"
  • "How long will this manicure last?"
  • "What nail shape would you recommend for my hands?"
  • "Do you have any current specials?"
